My husband and I discovered these remarkable automatic espresso/cappuccino machines while on a business trip to Atlanta.  I am a coffee drinker; I usually drink a couple of cups in the morning.  It is unusual for me to drink coffee in the afternoon but this guy in Atlanta was so excited about the coffee he was brewing that he was handing out free samples and making big claims.   It was summer in Atlanta but the meeting room was overly air conditioned and the after lunch speaker was just a little bit dull.  So I did.

As I watched this enthusiastic barista brew my gourmet coffee by pressing just one button and waiting just 30 seconds, I began to have my doubts.  It was so easy.  I thought it must be too easy.  Everyone who enjoys good quality coffee knows that the grinding, tamping, boiling, brewing and pouring of a fine cup requires a refined technique and talent  or, at best, a couple of greenbacks and a precious few minutes waiting in line. Based on the time and effort required to brew my cup of mochaccino that afternoon in Atlanta, I expected a typical vending machine cup of coffee: bland and lukewarm with no body, little flavor and much too sweet.

 I went back every afternoon for the entire time I was in Atlanta. My husband, who never drinks coffee, joined me drinking the hot chocolate. By the third day there was a line of other people crowded around the machine.  I noticed that I was actually disappointed that I couldn’t have my afternoon cappuccino.
